Patrick Reed's streak of not missing a major since 2014 is in jeopardy at the PGA Championship.
You know that feeling of sitting on a secret, not being able to tell a soul?
That’s how I felt earlier this month when Mike Forsey and Mike Glancy of PAYNTR Golf let me in on a little secret. They had just partnered with Jason Day. I got off that call immediately excited for what this meant for the budding golf brand, one that we’ve seen blossom over the past few years.
If you’re unfamiliar with PAYNTR Golf, here’s a refresher. They exploded onto the scene after taking the top spot in our 2022 golf shoe testing. The Portland, Ore., golf performance brand followed that with a stellar performance in 2023 as well.
The one thing PAYNTR has been missing? The big name. Sure, a stable that consists of Mike Weir and long drive giant Martin Borgmeier is nice. But in order to reach the masses, PAYNTR needed someone who really moves the needle.
Enter Jason Day.
There is a lot of cool gear in the golf equipment world that doesn’t always fit neatly into Most Wanted Tests or Buyer’s Guides. You still want to know how it performs. In our We Tried It series, we put gear to the test and let you know if it works as advertised.
Golf+, a virtual reality golf game that’s played with a VR headset. I played Golf+ using the Meta Quest.
Connor. Director of Soft Goods Testing and resident sneakerhead. I’m not big on video games but ever since trying Golf+ at the PGA Merchandise Show, I’ve been hooked. Seriously, three minutes at the PGA Show convinced me that I needed this in my life.
Describing Golf+ isn’t the easiest thing to do. It’s fairly simple at a surface level. It’s an immersive golf experience made to play via a VR headset. But that’s where the simplicity stops.
Golf+ is something that has to be experienced to really understand. And, while I can’t ship a VR headset to each of you to try, the next best thing is to share some thoughts from people who have taken Golf+ for a spin. You’ll see some reactions in the video below.
Scottie Scheffler (Arnold Palmer Invitational) and Abraham Ancer (LIV Golf Hong Kong) were your victors this past weekend.
Scheffler’s putter switch dominated headlines as he saw massive improvements with the TaylorMade Spider Tour X mallet. The world No. 1 ranked fifth in strokes gained putting for the week at Bay Hill, gaining 4.36 shots on the field. Even with that performance, he is only at No. 107 on Tour for the year.
Scheffler has been all over the map with putters over the past year, mostly using blades. He had a long run with a Scotty Cameron Special Select Timeless Tourtype before starting to experiment halfway through 2023.
The Texan first changed to a wider-bodied Scotty Cameron Timeless Tourtype blade before going into a TaylorMade Spider Tour X SS proto mallet that is similar to what he is playing now. Scheffler also had a recent stint with a Logan Olson prototype blade.
The Spider Tour X putter in his bag is a half-inch longer (35.5 inches) than his previous gamer and features an L-Neck hosel and True Path alignment aid with a full-line sight line on top. It has 3 degrees of loft and a 72-degree lie angle.
To say the world of golfing technology is convoluted and filled with options would be a significant understatement. The options are nearly limitless and most of them are pricey. Rangefinders are a popular option for many golfers. Features, prices and quality vary widely. In this edition of Amazon Finds, we will explore the budget-friendly Revasri NK-1000 Rangefinder.
Rangefinders can make a golfer’s life a lot easier, aiding in improving course knowledge and lowering scores. The catch is that many are at least $100 with premium models exceeding $350. Are there less expensive options that can work just as effectively?
Amazon has a plethora of options when it comes to rangefinders. The Revarsi NK-1000 golf rangefinder aims to deliver the best bang for the buck. At only $47.49, it offers slope compensation, flagpole lock, pulse vibration, rechargeable battery and up to 1,000 yards or meters in range.
Packed with features but can it compete with other more expensive options on the market?
I purchased another cheaper rangefinder last year as my first-ever rangefinder. I was unsure of how much I would use it and didn’t want to spend a lot on something that might not fit into my routine. It quickly became a crucial part of my game and a huge benefit. Unfortunately, the cheaper rangefinder I had purchased, while actually really good in terms of performance, had the battery die at the end of the season. The price of the replacement battery was nearly a third of the unit’s cost so I decided to try out a new one. The Revasri NK-1000 has a rechargeable battery via USB-C that was a huge selling point for me. Based on its great reviews, the “Buy Now” button was hit and the wait began!
Do you know how many golf balls are lost each year on the island-green 17th hole at Sawgrass?
I’m more concerned with how many of those balls are actually retrieved. It’s risky business fishing out nearly 100,000 golf balls per year.
Why? Gators.
Any sensible golfer is not risking their life over a golf ball (yes, even a Pro V1 isn’t worth losing an arm). Luckily for you, PUMA Golf is making it cool to play with the gators. Or wear them!
Scottie Scheffler will begin his defense at the Players Championship paired alongside fellow Americans Rickie Fowler and Justin Thomas for the first two rounds.
North Carolina has become the 30th state to offer legal online sports betting, with eight operators partnering with existing state sports teams, venues or Native American tribes.
World No.1 Scottie Scheffler looks to repeat among 143 others playing for the richest purse on the PGA Tour. But does he have the edge?
We are fresh off a captivating weekend that included Scottie Scheffler winning in style and Anthony Kim showing signs of life. However, there is more news this Monday morning. A new Titleist golf club just hit the USGA’s conforming list—it appears to be some sort of TSR mini driver or maybe a biggie fairway wood.
USGA pics aren’t the best for determining scale, but the photo we have suggests some sort of REALLY “mini” variation of a TSR Series Driver, with similarities to the Titleist TSR4 being the most obvious. You can see the two flippable weights to provide CG change – higher flight with more spin in the back, flatter, lower spinning in the front.
The USGA lists loft at 13° only. So again, there’s just a sliver of insight as to whether this will be a “mini” driver or a new fairway addition to the family.
It is fair to say this listing is an attention-grabber. While TaylorMade currently has the mini market all to itself, we know there has been some curiosity inside Titleist about a shorter-shaft driver that’s easier to hit or at least easier to hit straight.
Titleist’s Director of Player Promotions, JJ Van Wezenbeeck, isn’t afraid to experiment (he’s a bit of a mad scientist in the club world). Dating back to last summer, we’re aware of some prototypes that were basically TSR1 heads with a fair amount of hotmelt added to the head. Those flew absurdly straight with not a whole lot of distance loss.
The new Ben Hogan PTx Tour irons share a strong DNA bond with the old Hogan Precision irons from 1954. And if you think about it, they also share DNA with the Hogan Ft. Worth 15 irons from 2015 and maybe even the Edge irons from 2018.
Each is the first iron set introduced by each iteration of the Ben Hogan Company.
Ben Hogan famously started his own golf equipment company in 1953 with a simple goal: to build the finest golf equipment money can buy. The Precision irons were the company’s first.
Now fast forward to 2015. Hogan is reborn and introduces the Ft. Worth 15 irons. Now, two bankruptcies and two reboots later, the newest iteration of Hogan gives us the PTx Tour irons.
The PTx Tour irons are a purpose-built progressive set that was no doubt in the works when Hogan shut down in July 2022. But now the new Hogan, under the direction of golf brand resurrection specialist Simon Millington, is celebrating its first new product launch.
No tournament in professional golf has been more negatively impacted by the PGA Tour/LIV split than The Players Championship.
The Players has been considered one of the deepest, if not the deepest, fields in the game. Unlike with the majors, The Players doesn’t have a mix of amateurs, club professionals or sectional qualifying. Getting into the tournament is based purely on long-term merit—The Players regularly has hosted the entire roster of top 100 players in the world with an exception or two for injured golfers.
The tag of “fifth major” has been discussed over the years, although The Players always seemed to fit better in a singular category unto to itself: a tier below the majors but elevated above everything else.
It feels different now.
This week’s edition will be missing three of the top 14 players in the world, according to Data Golf. The depth of talent is challenged as well as eight of the top 43 in the world won’t be at TPC Sawgrass—and that does not include 2022 Players champion Cameron Smith, Sergio Garcia, Patrick Reed, Mito Pereira, Abraham Ancer and others who otherwise would be in the field.
Hitting it 280 off the tee is great but what if your 7-iron only goes 130 yards? There’s a disconnect somewhere. Want to reconnect with your irons? I’ll walk you through six strategies to increase distance with your irons. You’ll be able to implement these strategies immediately and you don’t need to use all six at once.
As with all things golf, we at MyGolfSpy have done a lot of golf ball testing. Amateur golfers see what the professionals use and assume that’s the best fit for their game. This is not always the case. Amateurs have swing speeds and spin levels that are much different from the professionals.
The biggest mistake you can make when choosing a golf ball is not checking the specific iron distances it can produce.
When we did our 2023 golf ball testing, the Titleist Pro V1x, Callaway Chrome Soft X LS and the Titleist Pro V1x Left Dash were the longest golf balls for mid-swing speed—for the driver.
When we tested with irons, the LA Golf Ball, Titleist Pro V1x Left Dash and Titleist AVX were the longest.
Clean equipment is critical to consistent performance. Maintaining clean golf clubs and golf balls can be a challenge with brushes, towels or even our previously reviewed golf erasers. Is there a better way? Club Scrub thinks so and feels their product is the one and only thing you need to maintain clean golf equipment on the course. Should it be on your wish list?
As alluded to above, maintaining clean and dry equipment is crucial to getting the most consistent performance out of your gear. Dirty and/or wet golf balls or clubs result in significant performance loss and add to what can sometimes be an already frustrating sport. Using towels and brushes is the traditional method but still leaves a little to be desired as they also get dirty along with being a multi-stage process. The Golf Erasers we tried are another method although I found them next to useless. Is there a better product or method?
Club Scrub claims to have broken the code to clean golf equipment. This little pouch fills with water, is waterproof and includes a soft neoprene covering for wiping off the water after the golf ball or club is cleaned. With a built-in clip to attach to a bag or cart, the functionality certainly seems to be there.
It has been a particularly wet and muddy start to my golfing season. My clubs have picked up a lot more debris than usual and it’s been a struggle to keep golf balls clean. I searched for a solution that was better than my traditional towel and brush method. A MGS Forum member, knotthead12, made an unofficial review on his Club Scrub and had an overall good experience with it. So I thought it was worth a shot and headed to Amazon. Club Scrub has 500-plus reviews with a 4.8-star rating out of 5. My expectations were high.

After a long season of battling, the top 32 golfers from the VCT were named and are headed into a fun two-person matchplay event to end the season.
Individual banner awards will be named for those who claimed the overall season prizes for most net birdies or better, longest drive of the season and overall winners for first, second and third place.
Next the pairings are still being sorted as we enter the final week for submitting scoring. Then the fun begins as pairings are announced and the matches are set!
Scottie Scheffler made every important putt to build a 3-shot lead at the turn then poured it on with a game so complete he closed with a bogey-free, 6-under 66 -- the lowest score by 2 shots at Bay Hill in the final round.
Joe Durant took advantage of Stewart Cink's back-nine meltdown to win the Cologuard Classic on Sunday for his fifth PGA Tour Champions victory.
Brice Garnett holed a 15-foot birdie putt on the fourth playoff hole Sunday to win the Puerto Rico Open in his first tournament of the year, sending him to The Players Championship next week and giving him PGA Tour status for the next three years.
